How much to charge as a mobile mechanic in 2026

Hourly rate versus shop rate, the diagnostic and trip fee, brakes, oil, batteries, alternators and starters, inspections, and fleet work, with national price ranges and a worked quote you can copy.

By Paul DeLalla, founder of Zeemy. Updated September 10, 2026. National figures in US dollars.

Mobile mechanics charge $50 to $150 an hour in 2026, with the national average near $85 to $95, against $120 to $160 at an independent shop and more at the dealer. The customer saves the tow and the day off work, and you save the rent, which is why most of the common jobs are quoted flat: brake pads at $150 to $350 an axle, a battery at $150 to $350 installed, an alternator at $400 to $1,100 with the part.

This guide gives you a starting price for every service, explains what pushes the number up or down, and walks one driveway quote from the code scan to the total. The typical column matches the list Zeemy is adding for mobile mechanic accounts, so you can start from it and adjust for your market and your parts supplier.

What moves the price

Your hourly versus the shop rate

You have no bay rent, but you have the truck, the tools, the insurance, and the drive between jobs. Price your hourly at $85 to $110 in most markets, not $60 because you feel you should be cheaper than the shop. Customers are paying to skip the tow and the waiting room, and they know it. Flat-rate the brakes, batteries, and oil changes so the estimate is a number, not a guess.

Parts markup and who buys them

Mark parts up 20 to 45 percent over your cost, and put the part on its own line so the markup is not hidden in the labor. If the customer wants to supply their own part, charge full labor, no warranty on the part, and a second trip fee if it is wrong. Get the estimate approved before you order, so you are never holding an alternator for a car that is not getting fixed.

Vehicle, access, and where it sits

A starter on a pickup is an hour on your back. The same starter under an intake on a European sedan is three. Quote by the job on the vehicle you are looking at, and charge more for a car in a parking garage, on a slope, or in an apartment lot where you cannot spread out.

Trip fee and radius

A $50 trip fee covers the drive and the wasted visit when nobody is home. Waive it on jobs over a few hundred dollars and inside your core radius, charge it every time outside. A same-day or after-hours call is worth a 30 to 50 percent premium, and roadside no-starts in the rain are worth more than that.

Fleet accounts

The landscaper with five trucks and the plumber with four vans want one mechanic, one visit a month, and one invoice. Price fleet labor a little under your retail hourly, bundle oil, filters, and an inspection at a per-vehicle rate, and bill it on a monthly recurring invoice. It is the steadiest money in the trade and it fills the slow weeks.

A worked quote

A commuter's Honda has a grinding front brake, an oil light, and a filter that was last changed at the dealer three years ago. Here is the quote, built at the hood in about a minute, with the part and the labor visible on each line.

ESTIMATE
Front brakes and oil, the Nguyens
AWAITING APPROVAL
Brake pads and rotors, front axle$450.00
Brake pads, rear axle$250.00
Oil change, full synthetic$150.00
Engine air filter$60.00
Total$910.00

The front axle needs pads and rotors, so it goes on at the full flat rate. The rear pads are worn but the rotors will pass, so that axle is quoted at pads only, which is the honest number and the one that gets approved. The oil change is what they called about, and the air filter is the add-on that costs you five minutes while the hood is open. The trip fee is waived because the job is over $300.

They approve on their phone, you order the rotors from the parts counter on the way, and the invoice goes out before the wheels are back on. Paid in the driveway, with the plumber's four vans across town on a monthly recurring invoice that bills itself.

Pricing tips from the field

Get the estimate approved before you order the part

Send the estimate with the part on it, wait for the approval on their phone, then order. It takes two minutes and it means you never eat a $300 alternator because the customer changed their mind while you were at the parts counter.

Charge for the diagnostic and credit it back

A $110 diagnostic visit that gets credited toward the repair pays you for the visit when they say no and costs them nothing when they say yes. Say it on the phone before you drive out, and put it on the estimate as its own line.

Quote pads and rotors per axle, not per car

Measure both axles and quote each at what it needs. The customer sees why the front is $450 and the rear is $250, and you are not discounting good rotors to win the job.

Sell the small stuff while the hood is open

Engine filter, cabin filter, wiper blades, a serpentine belt that is cracking. Each is $60 to $180 and five to twenty minutes of work you are already set up for. Offer them on every estimate.

Put fleet accounts on recurring invoices

Monthly oil and inspections on a per-vehicle rate, billed automatically with automatic reminders, are the accounts that pay the truck note. Sell them, set them up once, and let them bill themselves.
